Good schooling is all about teaching and discussion not on just a given subject but on affiliated subjects, it’s not about cramming the head full of information it’s about getting the student to understand the basics and then helping them to build on that understanding.
Experience takes time, training needs time, companies have to make the time and find the people to do such training, a ten day classroom course is not enough, what is needed is on is a combination of hands training with a splashing of classroom work, by people that can be around when needed, experienced people on a rig or that can be contacted when needed can achieve more than 20 student sitting in a class playing with calculators and filling out test papers.
3 ˝ years back I went to Keppelfels to write a 60 day school for a new build, I had 8 month to achieve it, what made it even harder was the equipment on the rig was new to me, not only did I write the classroom section I also did much of the hands-on training.
Since then I have lost count of the classes and lessons I have run or written or the new rigs I have been involved in or with and the people I have helped to train from both the drilling contractor side and from the Keppel engineering side, what I am attempting to say is “ the right person in the right place is what is needed”
The day will come when contracts will be won not on who has the best and biggest rig, but on who has the most effective crew that have been trained not to waste time, effort or expense,
The industry will face many challenges in the future but until we start to solve this issue we cannot move forward unfortunately the people the industry need do not have that much time left, you need to make the most of them now.
There are some good school around, but there are a lot of bums on seat school out there the schools I am listing here are some of the best that are not afraid to allow student to to have their say or be critical, myself included
