 Kick-off
« Thread Started on Oct 27, 2009, 8:29am »

HI
due to lack of equipment availability, we are in kind of situation, we set the 9 5/8"whip-stock at 3905m, mill 3 m in hole hole(3908m), ran junk basket to clear the bottom. then we ran in hole with 8 3/8" bit+8 1/8"near-bit, after drill 5m in open hole and found some CMT cutting in return, continued till 3922m and CMT cutting increase to 80%, we have 4 degree on whip. Looks we've gone to parallel to casing.
The situation is no MWD and M.Motor available in this part of world(IRAN). Mud weight is 1.95SG(16.24ppg) WBM-SSP heavy mud. Formation is red-brown hard clay stone. FIT performed with 2.30 SG EMW.

now wondering what to do.
Change the BHA ?
Go for CMT plug in open hole? then what kind of BHA.

Hi,
It would help if I knew what the side track is trying to achieve? If it is just getting around a fish, it may not matter that you are parallel.
Is the Mother bore Vertical?
What type of Bit are you drilling with?
What survey tools do you have?

Lots of questions. But don't be disheartened. Deviated wells where drilled long before motors.

there is always a bent sub you could run to build angle... but it seems there is an offset well in the field?

holdril brought up a good question as why are you sidetracking? it makes a difference...

HI
much appreciated,
this is a exploration well,
Actually the fish depth was 4700m in 7" liner( liner top is 3920m), Mother hole is vertical (0.7 degree), we drilling with 83/8" PDC(6 blade, HCD506X, Hughes) bit. and in spare 8 3/8" Tri-cone, MF27.
We don't have MWD but the single shot totco. and a mutli-shot gyro on request.
we trying to get MWD + M.Motor, but it 'll take about 10 day custom process in this world.

You shall probably get by the fish and what if you re-enter the hole below the fish. Don't worry too much about kicking-off.
If you had wanted to steer away you needed to run a building assembly. Full gage stab, then an under gage stab. and then a full gage Stab. set at say, 5 ft 30 ft and 90 ft.
As an aside a bent sub only achieves angle if you are sliding and you do not have a motor.

I was not necessary to run the junk basket, it's waste of time.
You can make a flexibile BHA with few stands of HWDP on bottom and put 10 Kip WOB on bit. Put DC above these HWDP. Drill rotary only one stand and expect a significant dogleg at window.

there was a crap cmt job after the CSG. so cmt was much softer then the formation, but luckily we got steer assy free from custom, we spot a balance cmt plug 16.5 ppg, WOC, went with 1.5 degree bend on motor, and here we are 30m in the formation.
thanks guys for sharing!!
