Tophole Cementing - Inner String vs. Subsea Launch
« Thread Started on Apr 15, 2010, 8:01am »

All,

I am currently in the process of planning a well in excess of +/- 650m water depth. The well design will incorporate 36" and 20" tophole section. Due to soil conditions jetting the 36" is not an option, so drilling and cementing for the 3 joints 30" conductor is planned. The 20" will be set in soft formation at +/- 900m MD. This should give sufficient integrity to drill the subsequent hole section. However the question is now inner string vs. subsea launch. The cementing company recommends inner string, I would prefer the subsea launch. Quicker, no risk to cement stinger in. What is your experience? Thanks Lazo

Can you define subsea launch? I have worked deepwater GOM for years and maybe they have another name for it...

The name of the kit is an SSR (Sub Sea Release) If yo have only worked on Jack-ups and never ran a liner you would not have seen them. The SSR is required to allow the plugs that are required to wipe the inside of a casing that has a bigger ID than the landing string. The SSR is installed in the casing or liner before the assembly is run in on a drill pipe landing string. Darts that fit inside the drillpipe are lauanched as if they are the plugs. When the first dart meets the plugs installed in the casing it released the bottom plug only. After the slurry is pumped the second dart is dropped and displaced with displacement fluid. When it gets to the plug it lauches it. and the cement job is as normal.

Very large plugs are not a good idea. I would suggest the inner string.

Yes ok, I know of SSR and in that respect only innerstring cementing due to several opportunities for NPT as a result of plug launching, plug deterioration, or other inconsistencies that are associated with SSR plug systems. Inner string is simple, proven, gets cement in place faster which can reduce the chance for SWF or shallow gas migration.
