Jackup Rig Accident in Jurong yard, Singapore
« Thread Started on Dec 3, 2012, 11:40am »

SINGAPORE: Ninety workers were injured in a rig accident at Jurong Shipyard on Monday morning.

One of them is in critical condition and 22 others are seriously injured. (Note: 20 have been discharged from hospital)

The injured workers were sent to four hospitals, including the National University Hospital and Alexandra Hospital.

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said on Monday afternoon that the accident happened at the worksite of Jurong Shipyard in Tanjong Kling Road.

Preliminary findings indicate that the jack-up mechanism of one of the legs of a three-legged jackup rig had failed, causing the rig to tilt to one side.

MOM said most of the workers had minor injuries.

Officers from its Occupational Safety and Health Inspectorate are at the site to investigate the accident. All work has stopped at the rig.

Sembcorp Marine, which owns the shipyard, said the incident happened at about 10.30am during a test to jack up the rig which was under construction.

It said all personnel working on board are accounted for - with no fatalities.

Of the 90 workers sent to various hospitals, 53 were discharged as at 5.10pm.

The shipyard is investigating the cause of the incident.

Channel NewAsia understands that most of the injured workers are from India and Bangladesh.

Forty-five of them were sent to the National University Hospital (NUH). Three of them have been warded, 20 have been discharged and 22 are under observation.
None of them was seriously injured.

A spokesman of Alexandra Hospital told Channel NewAsia that 17 injured workers were sent to its Accident and Emergency Department. They are in stable condition, with injuries such as back strains and abrasions.

All 17 of them were discharged by about 4.30pm. Some of them were picked up by their employers in a van.

Workers told Channel NewsAsia that they were conducting welding, fitting and piping works on the rig when it started to tilt.

Of the nine workers sent to Singapore General Hospital, one is a Singaporean and eight are from India.

In response to media queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it did not receive any calls for assistance.

However, it acted on information of a large number of casualties in an industrial area in 29, Tanjong Kling Road.

The SCDF said it sent officers from Jurong Fire Station to the scene at 12.48pm. By the time they arrived, all the casualties had already been sent to hospital.

Note: The photos show this to be an older rig. Google: "jacking failure jurong rig". The rig was apparently undergoing a jacking test at the time. Does anyone happen to know the rig name / owner?

"Noble-1" is what its called. Windwall at monkey board and cranes are Noble blue.

It's a F&G JU3000.

Not sure how many (if any) of that particular model have been built.

I wonder if there were any folk working on the leg chords - that's even more scary than a punch through in a drilling situation.

Cheers,

SD2

According to Rig Zone:

"Singapore-based Chinese newspaper Shin Min Daily News reported on Monday that as many as 2,000 workers were working on the rig at the time of the incident. "

2000 workers??? I presume that is a typo?
