DRILLING IN TOTAL LOSSES AND PROBLEMS ANTICIPATING
« Thread Started on May 3, 2007, 9:00am »

DRILLING IN TOTAL LOSSES AND PROBLEMS ANTICIPATING:

Drilling 17 ˝” vertical holes to the depth of 1000 meters with air and foam.

What capacity of compressor and booster is required to lift the cuttings in the annular to surface?

Basic Compressor: 350 psi, 1150 cfm.
Compressor Booster: What psi and cfm is required?

How many basic compressors are required?

Please advice whether one screw compressor is enough to one compressor booster?

Following are the details:
1. Drilling with 5 ˝” DP, 17 ˝” Stabilizer, 8” DC + 6 ˝”DC + 5” HWDP.
2. Drilling Depth - 1000 m. Vertical Hole.
3. Drilling in Sedimentary Zone.
4. General History of Total Losses:
a. Frequent; partial to total losses: 0 to 300m
b. Frequent; total losses: 300 to 450m
c. Infrequent; dynamic: 450 to 625m
d. Very infrequent; partial: 625 to 675m
e. Very infrequent; dynamic 675 to 775m
f. Very infrequent; partial 775 to 975m

5. General Litho logy:
a. 0 to 150m: Calcareous dolomites, shale and argillaceous L.St.
b. 150 to 230m: Dolomites; gypsum/anhydrite
c. 230 to 350m: Fossiliferous Lst./argillaceous L.St.
d. 350 to 450m: L.St. – Fossiliferous.
e. 450 to 475m: Shale – Grey in color and plant remains.
f. 460 to 630m: Interbedded sequence of L.St. & Shales.
g. 630 to 675m: Shales- varicolored – olive, brown, green.
h. 675 to 775m: Carbonate sequence of L.St. & Dolomites.
i. 775 to 875m: sequence of sub-feldspathic to sub-arkosic S.St., Siltstones, and mudstones/shales.
j. 875 to 950m: top 5-10m red brown claystone. Sequence of sub-feldspathic to sub-arkosic S.St., Siltstones, and mudstones/shales. Shales are red purple and green in color.
k. 950 to 1000m: marine gray shale. Marine sandstones.

6. General Hydrogeology:
Static Water Level: 120 to 140m below ground level.
7. If any body can guide me mud pump capacity?

It looks that the main problem zone is 300-450.
Depending of what is the cost of the problem I would suggest some different solutions.

Set a casing as close to 300 as possible.

Install a Rotating Control Device.

Use reverse circulation drilling with our Continuous Flushing System.

Your need in air and liquid will be minimized.

It may be possible to drill blind with water, of course this opens up other conserns and challenges.

You need high viscosity and and light drilling fluid (Foam), and to avoid the total losses you should prevent solids loading inside the annular, is such case the best way to determine you injection parameters is is a trail with different rates, increasing air flow rate until you got returns, this will be your optimal flow rates.
If the solids starts loading you should ull out 2, 3 or 4 stands and then start again reaming slowly to lift solids.
Also you have to note that while stoping circulation the losses zone is too weak and starts collapsing beacuase of the light density of foam.
