When decommisioning wells with a bentonite powder / cement mix is there a rule of thumb to the mixture levels. The wells in question are 100m deep & 10inch diameter. going off research in the US I have been advised to use a 5% bentonite to cement mix, whereas in the UK they use up to a 50% cement to bentonite mix. I know from past usage that a wallpaper paste type mix is ideal, but what mix is this ? Regards, Jim.

Dear Jim,
You may wish to look at the October & November 2004 issues of National Driller respectively:
- Grouting & Sealing Materials versus Cost - pp.56 & 67 (+ letter to editor pp. 4)
- Monitoring Well Abandonment - pp.28 & 30.
I receive the newspaper by mail and am not sure if copies are available at www.drilleronline.com
I note Type II cement (similar to API Class B - lower heat of hydration than Type I & sulphate resistant) with 2 - 5% bentonite & mix water in accordance with ASTM C150-92 is discussed for wells greater than 200 feet.
Hopefully the articles will assist you further although there is nothing about UK regulations.
Best regards, RAD.
